Sethu falls in love with the village head's daughter. However, things are not all that smooth, as his elder brother is given the responsibility of protecting the girl's honour until she is married.
Appu and Maya were childhood sweethearts, and their parents had agreed to their marriage. Appu is treated by Maya's father as his own son and this makes her uncle jealous of him. Maya's mother belongs a branch of local royal family. Gauri plans to marry Raja one day, and will not tolerate any other woman to even cast an eye on Raja. When Priya Rao from a big city, comes to the village, she too falls in love with Raja. Raja also starts to fall in love with Priya. And then when they are about to be married, Raja finds out that Priya is not what she claims to be, and he also finds out that she has an ulterior motive for coming to live in this village.
Uma marries Balu, an honest civil engineer. Uma thinks that he is rich and receives lot of bribes but turns out Balu is from the middle-class like her. Uma is a miser and dreams to become rich. After few years, they have two children. In the meantime, Priya, the daughter of Balu's boss Rajasekhar, falls in love with Balu and asks him to marry her unaware of Balu's marriage and his two children. Balu refuses to marry her as he was already married but she compels him. When Priya meets Uma, she offers her one crore rupees in exchange for marrying Balu. Uma immediately agrees and she starts forcing Balu for remarriage. Finally, Balu agrees with heavy heart as Uma threatens to commit suicide. Soon, Balu also starts falling in love with Priya. Uma slowly realizes her mistake and wants to get Balu back. The rest of the story is what happen to Balu, Uma and Priya.
Kuppusamy (Nassar), an innocent man, dreams to perform in Pandi's troupe. Pandi (Delhi Ganesh) is a respected male troupe leader, and the troupe performs in Hindu festivals. Baasi (Bala Singh) is expelled from the troupe for his bad behaviour. Finally, Pandi accepts Kuppusamy into his troupe. Ponnamma (Revathi), Pandi's daughter, a blind girl, falls in love with Kuppusamy. For some time, the festivals organizers prefer female dancers. Pandi dies during a stage performance and the troupe splits up. Kuppusamy leaves the village with Ponnamma to become a cinema actor. There, they meet Baasi and he accommodates them. Baasi rapes Ponnamma and kills her. Kuppusamy is sent to a mental hospital but he manages to escape. Kuppusamy is determined to take revenge.
Muthazhagu is a fisherman who rescues Vaidehi. Vaidehi reveals nothing about her background except that she has attempted suicide. She falls in love with Muthazhagu. Meanwhile, the sister of Muthazhagu's boss, falls for him too. Vaidehi is now whisked away by her powerful rich father to get her married to the groom of his choice.

Srividya (24 July 1953 – 19 October 2006) was an Indian film actress who appeared in films in the Tamil and Malayalam film industries for 40 years. In the latter part of her career, she concentrated on Malayalam films. Her portrayals as a mother in many films were highly acclaimed. In addition to acting, she occasionally worked as a playback singer as well. Srividya's personal life was full of tragedies. In 2006, she died of breast cancer.
