There is no escape from the war... 1942. While all the forces of the country are thrown into the fight against fascist Germany, in the southern part of Yakutia there are gangs robbing gold mines. The largest of them is the elusive and brutal Popov gang, which collects stolen gold to organize a military coup in the Far East. In their footsteps, a small detachment of the NKVD under the leadership of Senior Lieutenant Karasev is sent through the snow-covered endless taiga.
23-year-old student Alyona returns from Moscow to Yakutsk after a call from her mother's friend Svetlana, who says that her mother Anna has been missing for three days now. The girl goes to the police, and she is shown a printout, which contains the last date when Anna called the intercity taxi. The policeman adds that, according to the taxi driver, he took the described woman to a village called Symyr. Alyona immediately decides to go to Symyr and asks her stepfather to take her.

Young Alyoshka marries because his mother insists – the chum should not go vacant, the family should not die out. His heart though longs for Ilne, the daughter of old Petko. Ten years ago Ilne left the camp for the mainland. Every day Alyoshka checks the road hopelessly waiting for his love to return.
