When the doorbell rang late night during the Soviet times, if was often the sign of military recruitment. The chain of events in the film begins from the fatal ring at the door, putting the marriage of a young photographer and his beautiful wife to the test. Being afraid of the army, the young family try to escape the situation. However, they are drifting away from freedom.
Toomas Simmo is a simple worker who has seen a lot of injustice and carelessness in his life. Yet he has not become bitter or lost the ability to understand and encourage other people who are struggling with their problems. When he lies in the hospital with an amputated leg, her daughter presents him with the most difficult choice of his life.
The film is about one of the greatest social hot spots in Estonia during the Soviet times when apartments were distributed by the state, telling the story of a real estate agent and a homeless man. Mass immigration in 1944-1988 led to demographic conflict. Free apartments were mainly given to immigrants despite the fact that local people badly needed places of residence as well. They are not tourists, they live here, but they haven't got a home.
Irja Aav (née Irja Pilvet; May 12, 1944 Tallinn – August 6, 1995 Tallinn) was an Estonian actress. In 1964 she graduated from Estonian Drama Theatre's stage studio. Since 1965 she worked at Estonian Drama Theatre. Besides theatrical roles she played also on several films. From 1965 until 1974 she was married to Estonian actor Tõnu Aav. The couple had two sons, music producer and conductor Lauri Aav and prop maker Ardi Aav.
